The Regency Society, the city's oldest conservation society now has a new website. In an effort, no doubt, to appear modern the elegant traditional-style font of the banner heading has been supplanted by sans-serif and the ammonite capital motif has been abandoned. The old website suffered from a cramped, over-busy look; the new lacks visual impact, the word that jumps to mind is 'pallid'. It does, however appear to be more logically laid-out, easier to navigate and the pages quicker to load.
Apparently the version shown is still in 'beta. Alterations in style & appearance will be straightforward and can be expected.
ReplyDeleteMostly the Regency Society logo offends. Both the logo and website were put together by Trustee Sarah Gibbings, who tells me she is a communications strategist and the job was to "reposition" the Regency Society. Why then create a logo/masthead that messages about as clearly as an MI5 front organisation? That is to say - no message.
ReplyDeleteNo home page, no search engine on the website....and because of the use of software ($28 a month if not actually free) from CushyCMS, there is a possibility that no search engine can be installed.

I'm told CushyCMS software is best suited for a static site that has a small number of permanent pages that rarely change - such as a restaurant might have and the only the menu page would be updated with changes, say. This inhibits the ability of the Regency Society to 'grow' its site.
ReplyDeleteAdding a search engine would be a new instruction with new costs attached to get it on.
I'm advised that 'Joomla' - the free software used by Hot Chilli Box who 'designed' the repositioned Regency Society website - would have been more suitable.
Note to readers: The Regency Society website currently appears to have been taken offline.
