Was it in fact an ornamental brandy-barrel displayed as a nod to the smuggler's trade and in lieu of a conventional house nameplate?</div><br /> <p></p>quedulahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09737971867539674984noreply@blogger.com0Rottingdean, Brighton, UK50.807427999999987 -0.06032599999999999122.497194163821142 -35.216576 79.117661836178826 35.095924tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1768273561705178788.post-81043926612221519362021-04-24T18:13:00.003+02:002021-04-24T18:27:25.655+02:00Restore the Stanmer Palm House.<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7ZHDKBrwxSFVvnfn-m4x3FQBxBxOVdKcmLv9KzUlr7HJXf4a2_PXAx7khXmyLJ4Jhpx-NJfUF9usRIStwjFBIvJKeSVCUmjJ1Z7-qDbTHsUYvTOojG-4UPXUGWoPcuevs59MJA6ZTJKgg/s568/Screen+Shot+2021-04-24+at+16.31.13.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="370" data-original-width="568" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7ZHDKBrwxSFVvnfn-m4x3FQBxBxOVdKcmLv9KzUlr7HJXf4a2_PXAx7khXmyLJ4Jhpx-NJfUF9usRIStwjFBIvJKeSVCUmjJ1Z7-qDbTHsUYvTOojG-4UPXUGWoPcuevs59MJA6ZTJKgg/w400-h260/Screen+Shot+2021-04-24+at+16.31.13.png" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The Palm House</div><p></p><p>Since 2019 Plumpton Agricultural College and BHCC with partners have been working to restore Stanmer's Victorian walled garden, build a new Horticultural Centre of Excellence and open as <a href="https://www.instagram.com/OneGardenBrighton/">'One Garden Brighton'</a> which will be a destination garden for the community. After laying abandoned for years the work is now complete and the garden is open to the public for the first time in its history.</p><p>The Palm House, near the gates of One Garden Brighton, is one of only three remaining of its kind in England. They were built in the 1950s for local councils and were originally heated. The Walled Garden during this time was a nursery for Brighton & Hove City Council and a space to grow plants for the city parks. </p><p>The Palm House has not been a part of the original restoration project and the ambition is to now restore it and open it for the public to enjoy. This will involve refitting the heating system and reglazing the glass so that it can house exotic plants. Plans include adding a vaulted walkway with viewing platforms and an educational experience showcasing a wide variety of plant species. Water has been penetrating the roof for some time and threatening Matcham's intricate plaster work inside. The work called for involves removing the sliding cupola and its supporting ironwork. This ironwork penetrates the roof and is a source of water leakage. Duct work is also causing leakage and will be removed together with the gang walk encircling the roof and its access steps. This will allow a new roof to be constructed over all. The new roof willl be supported on the perimeter columns and create a space from which access can be had to the old roof and, through access points made in it, to the interior plasterwork.<p></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoxXhApOejJu79KxTKclaNonLq81anPIZ4TpaqV6CYPb6C1Rqo6Eob_shI944pHkeLz4GoiGIBshUxU4_i-4neYTYBSlrNL9hawNcB6lw2m17uT9qItqldvVt_mjExBSbVMm2dWvfxduYJ/s569/Screen+Shot+2021-04-18+at+18.04.50.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="296" data-original-width="569" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoxXhApOejJu79KxTKclaNonLq81anPIZ4TpaqV6CYPb6C1Rqo6Eob_shI944pHkeLz4GoiGIBshUxU4_i-4neYTYBSlrNL9hawNcB6lw2m17uT9qItqldvVt_mjExBSbVMm2dWvfxduYJ/w400-h208/Screen+Shot+2021-04-18+at+18.04.50.png" width="400" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Section viewed from Middle Street showing proposed new roof structure.<br /><br /></td></tr></tbody></table><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCfCMRmB938KQxEiyv-m2eyxu9wjszEGYP6PWEUhMbxBNk1N63kNFjD2iQA8WCK666Y4vQ4O7Da9Lspbhkn5Y7At78D_3vmMK8T58f9TyvsMt4me7gcqYdC7yEfBiVqS0nq8ezxN9-Kr-s/s470/Screen+Shot+2021-04-18+at+17.59.21.png" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="321" data-original-width="470" height="274" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCfCMRmB938KQxEiyv-m2eyxu9wjszEGYP6PWEUhMbxBNk1N63kNFjD2iQA8WCK666Y4vQ4O7Da9Lspbhkn5Y7At78D_3vmMK8T58f9TyvsMt4me7gcqYdC7yEfBiVqS0nq8ezxN9-Kr-s/w400-h274/Screen+Shot+2021-04-18+at+17.59.21.png" width="400" /></a><br /></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">External appearance viewed from the west.<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">1. Wealthy Londoners, encouraged by the expansion of railway lines serving the capital, began to look beyond metroland to the hills and woodlands of Surrey for their retirement homes. In what was then a mainly rural county the supply of suitable properties was limited and they turned to architects such as Lutyens (influenced by Gertude Jekyll), Falkner, Bailey and Nevill to help fulfil their rural idyll. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Apprised of their clients' domestic and comfort needs the architects turned to the Surrey vernacular for inspiration and found it in the various combinations of red-brick, red-tiles and the occasional timber framing. The Surrey style was born. Unaccountably what later came to signpost the Surrey Style were imposing chimneys which, whatever decorative features they incorporated, were always large.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The architect of 11 Grand Avenue, Hove, was A. Faulkner. It was built by William Willett, 1900-1903. The manner in which it has, over the years, withstood the ravages of time in what is quite an exposed location bears witness to the quality of the build. Three 4 bedroom detached house are to be built to the east of the existing cottages and a further semi-detached dwelling tacked on to the west side. The existing cottages are to be restored and reconfigured to meet modern standards including new windows. The westward addition will unfortunately spoil the symmetry of the Edwardian cottages but matching bricks and detailing are proposed throughout the development so the overall effect should be reasonably harmonious. Seven parking spaces are to be provided at the rear.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwaVnKHb_a64ybhy2wXKg1celLrcpvTFVUWLoVs6fIUGA4cFx8TyhEojhF5yCirbdWyB-9LKU0zboDjPMSAg4OzmDjPeNRuzU79A-2GHM0CYB6y_GL0PdO5m4cyEox8Ea0BbI56atnWf3Z/s2048/IMG_6331.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; Patcham Place was built in the 16th.C but the facade was later modified with the black mathematical tiles that can be seen today. It is said to be haunted by one of its owners Anthony Stapley who lived there c1620-1655. He was a leading Puritan and Parliamentarian in the area and one of the 59 MPs who signed Charles I's death warrant.

After gas production on site ceased in 1860 the site was used for gas storage and distribution. For much of this span of time activities on the site went unrecorded leading, as far as redevelopment is concerned, to significant uncertainty and risk of unknown underground obstructions and contamination.The site forms part of the council's strategic site for redevelopment DA2 which includes the Marina. </div>

Now prospective developers <a href="https://brightongasworks.co.uk/about-st-william/">St William</a> have launched a public consultation on their landscape-led proposals for the site. A key feature of the site has been identified as it ability to open up a new green link between the South Downs National Park, the city and the sea.<br />

<br />
<div>
The owners of the Hilton Metropole Hotel (Topland), are seeking the views of local residents on a proposed development of a new 221 room hotel on the northeast corner of the Metropole site.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The site comprises vacant hotel exhibition space to the rear of the Metropole which is no longer required by Hilton, and also incorporates 31-32 Cannon Place, on the corner of Cannon Place and St. Margaret’s Place. This Grade II listed building, which currently accommodates a fire escape for the Hotel, is to be retained and fully integrated into the new proposals with the splendidly porticoed entrance reopened to provide a second entrance to the new hotel. The main entrance will be on Cannon Place also giving access to a large reception area opening on to a landscaped courtyard.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The existing blank wall of the Exhibition Hall creates an unwelcoming atmosphere on an important pedestrian route to the seafront from Western Road. The frontage of the new hotel provides a good opportunity to improve on this. Main concerns are likely to be with the bulk and height of the building and the extent to which this can be ameliorated by sensitive design.<br />
